CALL FOR PAPERS Lab Surfing workshop – Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) Milan, 20-21 May 2014

The EYE project is looking for applications for participation in the brainstorming, networking and training workshop for young researchers engaged in high risk ICT-related interdisciplinary research (postdocs and PhD researchers in their final year of PhD). Travel and accommodation costs of selected participating young researchers will be (partly) covered (up to EUR 300) by the FP7 EYE project on the basis of actual receipts. The Lab Surfing workshop will provide a great opportunity for young researchers to share their ideas, brainstorm about possible topics for projects in future and emerging technology, and participate in training on methodologies for innovation and preparation of project proposals. The overarching scientific focus of the event is “Innovation and technologies for a better living”. Research proposals DO NOT have to fit the above theme. Countless brilliant submissions haven't made it easy for the judges of this year's Prix Ars Electronica Jury, but in the end they have decided on outstanding works of media-art.

The winners of the Prix Ars Electronica 2013 will be announced on May 16th at 10:00 am (CEST). You can follow the press-conference via live-stream on www.aec.at/prix and Twitter-Coverage. On Thursday you will find all the winning projects online aec.at/prix/en/gewinner/

What do medical counterfeits, sexual harassment and the hardships of learning to play an instrument have in common? All these issues have been tackled by World Summit Award winners in 2011. This year, we are for the 6th time searching for the world’s most outstanding e-Content developers. A couple of days ago, the Spaxels took over the nightsky of London, painting a gigantic emblem of the Star Fleet Academy to promote Star Trek - Into Darkness. Next stop is Bergen/Norway, where the artistic prowness of the Spaxels will be shown in cooperation with Phase 7, a German visualisations-collective.


In Touch With The Earth



Starting April 19th, the Ars Electronica Center focuses on Earth and it's marvels. Together with the Japanese technology-institute Miraikan, impressive ways to look at our planet, the people who populate it and their connections and much more is taking over the Deep Space and the GeoPulse. Hermann Nitsch - SINNE UND SEIN





The Nitsch Museum in Mistelbach is showing a retrospective of the master's work and the Ars Electronica Futurelab has designed and built one part of the exhibition, a small-scale Deep Space showing a couple of pieces by Nitsch, including two new ones especially designed for this installation. www.aec.at/aeblog

What do John Lasseter (Pixar Studios? first animation artist), Sir Tim Berners-Lee (the inventor of HTML) and Wikipedia have in common? They?ve all been awarded by the Prix Ars Electronica.


2013 is the 27th edition of Prix Ars Electronica, so there?s quite some history to look back on. Christine Schöpf, who has been around from the beginning, talks about the not so humble beginnings of the Prix Ars Electronica and discusses the current trends in computer-animation. The EYA jury had a hard time selecting the one and only Overall Winner of the European Youth Award 2012. At the Gala Ceremony we finally found out who made the grade:

Congratulations to Erika Rossi and her project I Mirabilia (?The Wonders?), a family of three bright interactive dolls for hospitalised children. The interactions triggered by the dolls are designed to enable the children to share their emotions, connect to other children and confide in therapists.

The passion is strong, the purpose is clear: the Special Award of the City Graz for the best business project went to Bistra Kumbaroska representing Mladiinfo ? your link for free education. In order to overcome the discrepancy in mobility and quality of education between youth, the online platform provides information on formal and informal educational opportunities, training and conferences, jobs and internships, volunteering, grants and contests

Young Digital Africa on the rise at EYA
Stella ?The Rocket? Tembisa Ndabeni Abrahams, Deputy Minister of Communications from South Africa charmed the EYA crowd at first sight. With the slogan ?each one, teach one!? she opened the Young Digital Africa Panel and emphasised that sharing knowledge with others is important for the sake of innovation and the future of education.

Looking back at EYA 2012
After eight months of preparation time the European Youth Award Festival in Graz finally opened its doors. Over 150 IT-experts, policymakers, community leaders, students and change-makers joined three days of Digital Revolution, Social Diversity and Open Innovation. It was inspiring to see such young people with great ideas and who actually make them happen.

The numbers speak for themself: more than 1150 young social entrepreneurs, web developers, app designers and data scientists from 121 different countries registered to the World Summit Youth Award competition 2012! This is impressing and very exciting! The jury will definitely have a hard time to select the 18 winning teams who will be invited to the WSYA Winners' Event 2012 in Montréal, Canada (Oct 22nd -24th).

CERN and Ars Electronica launch an open call for artists working in the digital domain to apply for the second Prix Ars Electronica Collide@CERN Residency Award. The winner will receive a fully-funded residency at CERN and Ars Electronica to create new dimensions in their artistic practice by encounters with the world of science. This is the second year of the collaboration between CERN and Ars Electronica. Online submissions can be made here http://collide.aec.at , the closing date is 26 September 2012.
